Pro Life News: Last week Pope Francis offered to help Chris and Connie Gard who are trying to keep their 11 month old son Charlie alive. The Pope says he is willing to provide a place at a paediatric hospital in Rome to help Charlie’s treatment. While we are preparing to defend the life of children here in Ireland, the example and witness of the Pope can inspire us to find creative ways to put “pro-life” into action.

TROCAIRE EAST AFRICA HUNGER CRISIS: With severe drought gripping many parts of East Africa, millions of people are facing starvation in the coming months. The severity and scale of the crisis is unprecedented in the recent decades. Combined conflict and drought has left almost 25 million people in East Africa requiring immediate food aid. The two worst affected countries in the region are Somalia and South Sudan, but parts of Ethiopia and Kenya are also badly hit. Ongoing conflict in South Sudan and Somalia has displaced millions of people and severely disrupted the food system. An Emergency Collection in aid of Trocaire’s work in East Africa will take place nationally on the weekend 22nd-23rd July. Trocaire is reaching over 150,000 people across the region with emergency food, water and sanitation. Needs are enormous – please support our appeal and help us reach more people with life saving aid. There will be a boxes at the back of all the Churches next weekend.

Baptism – Belonging to God’s Family: “Through Baptism men and women are incorporated into Christ. They are formed into God’s people and they obtain forgiveness of all their sins. They are raised from their natural condition to the dignity of adopted children. They become a new creation through water and the Holy Spirit. Hence they are called, and are indeed, the children of God. Baptism is the door to life and to the kingdom of God. Christ offered this first sacrament of the new law to all people that we might have eternal life. Further, baptism is the sacrament by which men and women are incorporated into the Church, built into a house where God lives, in the Spirit, into a holy nation and a royal priesthood”           from the General introduction to the Rite of Baptism

It is regrettable that the sacrament of Baptism is being described by some in media and political organisations as a “barrier.” This contradicts the very meaning of Baptism. How just or fair is a suggestion that discrimination against Catholic children is a solution to the problem of insufficient supply of places in primary schools in certain parts of the country? A recent survey in one of the Catholic schools in our parish found that children of 6 different religions or no religion are currently enrolled in the school.
